The Barbie history of America

BarbiehistoryFrom the Washington Post: "In 'Peace, Love, and Rock 'n' Roll' -- one of the first books in a series aimed to offer, as one of its creators puts it, 'history through the Barbie filter'-- Barbie and her African American friend Christie are both illustrated with pink skin and long, straight hair." The other new book in the series has Barbie teaching about the 1960s Civil Rights movement. Oh, the irony!

This thing is ripe for parody; I'm picturing Barbie going underground with the Weatherman, attacking the FBI for spying on and trapping Martin Luther King, witnessing King's assasination, and helping the Black Panthers organize free meals for the poverty-stricken.

Assume this is meant to leverage some of the appeal of American Girl?
http://www.portigal.com/FM/fm16.htm is my analysis of the brand experience (?!) from a couple of years back (before the NY store opened)
The American Girls Collection (one of several series of dolls available) is all about periods of history and the brave little girls who were there at the time...

I hope never to see:
- Brown v. Board of Ed. Barbie: She litigates for equal rights and looks fabulous doing it.
- Sit-In Barbie: She's dashing and fearless at the segregated lunch counter. Jim Crow Ken looks so confused!
- Rosa Barbie Parks: Of course you can't have my seat, you silly thing!
- Barbie X: At the window with the carbine (pigtails optional).

its just so nice that the Barbie franchise has done so much to represent a realistic body type for young girls.
