Captive audience
After years of riding the subways I've become numb to the ubiquitous advertising and (cold as this may seem) panhandling. I still occassionally notice a Poetry in Motion or an interesting musician, but mostly I just keep my eyes in my book or sleep. Alas, the relative tranquility of the underground ride may not last for much longer. The MTA is apparently considering installing televisions on subway cars. With the full compliment of advertising, of course. A leering Dr. Zizmor is easy enough to ignore; if I hear him actually talk, I might scream.
Of course, if I'm allowed to handle the remote control, it may be OK.

The T in Boston already has something similar installed on at least one subway line: a series of about 100 3'x4' back lit images mounted on the walls of the tunnel, which when passing at 40 mph or therabouts has the effect of something between a flipbook and a TV with no sound. The first time I saw one of them I thought it was an art installation and got really excited, but it turned out to be a Target ad. In correspondances with the MBTA they said that they are simply trying to prevent more fare hikes and advertising is the best way. I guess racist urban (re)development and substandard service can get quite expensive these days.
Go Sox.
