Retail stinks

The Washington Post reports on a new study measuring the effects of artificial scents in retail environs. The results: pumping a citrusy fragrance into the air boosts sales. But there's a caveat, naturally: in crowded environs, "citrus may be too arousing."

The article goes on to point out that the "impact of background music on shoppers is well documented: Loud rock music, for example, seems to encourage quick decisions and impulse buys." (Combine citrus scents with loud rock music and people will start fucking in the aisles.)
