How to fake a townhall meeting
Here's an awesome clip from the Daily Show about the Bush administration's penchant for staging television-friendly (that is, fake) townhall meetings. The interview with Republican wordsmith Frank Luntz is priceless. This guy is such a brilliant media strategist and yet he seems absolutely unaware that the Daily Show coorespondant (Samantha Bee) us gunning for him.

Actually, I think it is worse than that. I think he knows that Bee is gunning for him - he knows that he will look Machiavellian - and he couldn't care less.
Look at me! I can show you how the magic works but your demographic already hates what I stand for, so nobody that matters will understand the trick. This policy farce is going to run longer than The Fantastiks and there isn't a goddamn thing you can do about it.

Yeah, you're probably right -- Luntz must have known they were going to make fun of him. It bet it was his ego talking ("Everyone thinks Karl Rove is Bush's brain, but I'm the REAL genius!"

That's the best explanation I've read yet. He wants to bask in the recriminating publicity of the Left even if it means risking exposure among the Right. His hubris assumption that few Republicans actually watch the Daily Show may in fact prove to be his downfall. I know of several mainstream Reps that follow the show.
