Ray Beldner, artist

BitchAs some of you know, I pay my rent by working as a graphic and web designer; most of the projects I work on I couldn't with any conscience recommend, but the website of Ray Beldner is an exception. Belder is fantastic conceptual artist based in San Francisco. We featured a few pieces from his Counterfeit series--Belder's recreations of twentieth century masterpieces using dollar bills that he has sewn together--in the Illegal Art Exhibit. And much of his work reflects a similarly smart and funny take on American money culture. Be sure to check out Corporate Clothing Series and his latest, Porn Art. (The latter may need some explaining: for this series, he zoomed in on the artwork that sometimes appears in the background of porn movies and ads, captured stills of it, them blew the stills up into enormous digital prints.) Those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area should check out his upcoming solo show at Catharine Clark Gallery.

I don't get it. It seems to me that a lot of "conceptual art" is just dumb crap that people like because it's different.

I'm gonna take a box of toothpicks and throw them at a board covered in glue and call it "sticky pointy mess" and make millions.

I hate to bag on a reader of the blog (we want all the traffic we can get), but Greg, you are either wrong or stupid. If you are right then you will soon be a millionaire but I'm not holding my breath for the announcement.

There are a lot of ways and reasons to criticize art but "I can do that" is -- by far -- the lamest.

Greg sounds like my mother. She still believes that the best work I ever did was my realistic paintings from high school....

(should I tell him that I once made a piece using my own urine? Nah...)

This is all a bunch of too funny talk about some great art that someday will be sitting next to Jasper Johns if it isn't already. If anyone is going to be the mean critic around here, it's me, and I just don't see fit for such an act in this case. Bring on the real bad art and stop slamming the great stuff. Two years later and still super poignant.
