This land is your land (reprise)

After a series of shitty Supreme Court decisions, I was psyched to see one developer's response to the eminent domain case -- you know, the ruling that says that the government can take over your house if some corporation offering promising greater tax revenue wants it. The deciding vote was cast by Justice David Souter. So Logan Darrow Clements, a private developer in The Towne of Weare, New Hampshire, is seeking to build a hotel on Souter's house:

The proposed development, called "The Lost Liberty Hotel" will feature the "Just Desserts Café" and include a museum, open to the public, featuring a permanent exhibit on the loss of freedom in America...

"This is not a prank" said Clements, "The Towne of Weare has five people on the Board of Selectmen. If three of them vote to use the power of eminent domain to take this land from Mr. Souter we can begin our hotel development."

You have to love the irony of it all. I certainly think that decision was as bad as they come, but why not make lemonade, at least for now? I would love to see Souter's house be turned into a hotel. After all, they community would certainly get more revenue, and it's not like he is doing anything with the land anyways. I just love the whole karma idea.

I sent the following email yesterday to the Selectmen in Weare, NH:

Board of Selectmen
Weare, New Hampshire

Dear Selectmen:

My wife and I would like to book a suite in the "Lost Liberty Hotel" on the former farm of Chief Justice Souter for opening night.

If still available, we would like to stay in the "Justice Souter Be Careful What You Wish for Suite" on the top floor.

If that should be already booked, then please give us a suite with a balcony overlooking the splendid views of the former Souter property.

Also please reserve dinner for us at the "Just Desserts Cafe."

Let us know which credit cards you accept. We would like to do our part in bringing economic prosperity to your town.

Looking forward to getting out of the city,

Hey, I just came across your blog a few days ago, but I'm here to stay. Your counterculture, minus-money point of view is a damn reasonable one that at least deserves to be heard, and you express it well. Oh, and unlike adbusters, you manage to do it without advocating the mass murder of jews. I like that.

So, they're really saying that big business is more important than the rights of the people. I say, its high time to give the Supreme Court an overhaul. Sandra Day O'conner just announced she was retiring in October, so I would imagine that the 4th of July fire works just may start a few days early this time around. She was the critical swing vote, so now all the marbles are on the table.
