When buying books online this fall, please remember your friends the bloggers. For anything you buy from Amazon or Powells via this site, for instance, we get a kickback of 5 to 7 percent. And that includes not only books but DVDs, toasters, Cartier watches, and finger paint.

Handy search engines at the right of each page. End of pitch.

I'm glad to find Stay Free again, after first discovering it at a now-gone Santa Monica independent bookstore. Keep up the good work.

I'll second Powells, as well as all local independent bookstores. Can you do one of those search box thingies with Booksense?

I don't know anything about Booksense...Keeping track of two choices is pretty much all I can handle.

Booksense is a network of independent bookstores. You can order from their website and have your nearest independent store fulfill the order. It's intended to get people aware of the stores around them.

I like Powells, but although it's independent, it kind of feels like an independent behemoth, sort of the opposite spirit of what independent stores are all about.

Sorry to go on about this--after working in independent stores for about six years, I have a burr under my saddle when it comes to this stuff.
