Hummer's "First Day"

HummerkidsFirst saw this commercial awhile ago, but watching it on the Hummer web site gave me the heebie-jeebies all over again. First of all, there's the spot's implicit message: Drive a Hummer and make your child (whether or not he resembles James Spader) cool. Or, Drive a Hummer, and your little geek doesn't get beat up.

Then there's the low, soothing modulation of the mother's voice. Couple that with her appearance -- carefully mussed-up blonde hair, angular features -- and I can almost detect something Oedipal going on.

Actually, the FREAKIEST thing about this commercial is the Donnie Darkoesque bunny-head that shows up in the middle right side when we see the first shot of the school.

I've always liked the Hummer commercials, actually, as they are far less offensive than many other car commercials. They make no claims about "safety" or "environmental cleanliness", making them amongst the most straightforward ads.

I was also thinking of buying a Hummer; if that's too subtle a statement, I'll paint "I'm a Dick" on the side of it.
