Brooklyn Shopkeepers Can't Make Up Their Minds

The_new_halal Indecisive_door On a recent walk along New York Avenue in Brooklyn, I saw two signs that point to some serious schizophrenia on the part of the store owners. The first appears on the entry door of a bodega -- and leads to a lot of Midvale-School hilarity -- but the second points to yet another reason why the terrorists hate us: the way America changes Muslims that move here.

I can't decide what would upset Osama more: that bacon is considered halal or that the deli sells bagels.

Oh come on, you can't seriously get bent about this. One of America's most excellent qualities is its exuberant and highly random ongoing cultural mash-up, a natural by-product of immigrants repeatedly reinterpreting themselves and us. Hot dogs at Chinese restaurants, bagels at church, fried Twinkies, whatever, it might kill you but at least you'll be highly entertained in the process. Consider it an open culinary discourse; you don't have to eat it if you don't want to.

I'm not getting bent seriously.

Not to be too pedantic, but there certainly is halal bacon; it is made from beef or turkey.

Does that look like an illustration of turkey bacon to you?
